Was Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, duped?

Empress Catherine the Great’s crown, created in 1762 for her coronation, features an impressive 4,936 diamonds, 75 pearls, and a large, crimson spinel – sitting like a massive cherry atop a priceless sundae. This jewel was the inspiration for the ruby in my book – The Worth of a Ruby. Historically, rubies and spinel were confused due to their similarity. However, rubies, especially Burmese ones, are generally more valuable.

I wonder if Queen Catherine knew the difference!

The birthstone for July is the ruby – a vibrant red gemstone that’s associated with passion, vitality, and courage. Rubies are said to symbolize: protection, wealth, love, commitment, integrity, strength, energy, and confidence. Rubies from Burma have been considered the best in the world for centuries.

Ruby mining in Burma (Myanmar) dates back over a thousand years. The Mogok region, famed for its “pigeon blood” rubies, has been a primary source since the 15th century. During British colonial rule, mining became more industrialized. Despite political turmoil and ethical concerns, Burma remains a leading ruby producer, with significant contributions to the global gemstone market though mining conditions remain harsh.
